Why Steve Ritchie Is One of the Greatest Pinball Designers Ever
Very few people have influenced pinball as much as Steve Ritchie.
Known around the world as the King of Flow, Steve Ritchie built his reputation by designing incredibly fast, smooth and addictive pinball machines that feel effortless to play. His layouts have an unmistakable rhythm, with shots flowing naturally from one to another in a way that few designers have ever matched.
For more than four decades he has continued to reinvent himself, creating some of the most iconic pinball machines ever produced while inspiring generations of designers that followed.
The Beginning of a Legendary Career
Steve Ritchie's first major success came in 1980 with Black Knight.
The game introduced several innovations and immediately established him as one of the industry's most exciting designers. It was also one of the earliest machines to feature an upper playfield, something that would become one of his trademarks over the following years.
Throughout the 1980s he continued refining his unique philosophy with legendary titles such as High Speed and F-14 Tomcat, both famous for their incredible speed, flowing layouts and exciting light shows.
Players quickly learned that a Steve Ritchie machine was always going to be fast, satisfying and incredibly fun.
The Evolution of the King of Flow
Steve Ritchie constantly looked for new ways to improve his layouts.
One of his most recognizable ideas became the upper flipper feeding long, satisfying loops across the top of the playfield.
This concept evolved through several of his games.
Black Knight 2000 expanded the upper playfield concept even further.
Later, No Fear: Dangerous Sports introduced another creative variation, with the upper loop featuring an unforgettable jump shot that perfectly matched the game's extreme sports theme.
These innovations became part of Steve Ritchie's signature style and helped define many of his greatest machines.
Some of the Greatest Pinball Machines Ever Made
During the 1990s Steve Ritchie designed several machines that became instant classics.
It was difficult to walk into an arcade without finding a Terminator 2: Judgment Day or The Getaway: High Speed II. Both games became enormous commercial successes thanks to their fast gameplay, memorable toys and endless replay value.
Another masterpiece followed with Star Trek: The Next Generation, a game that many collectors still consider one of the greatest widebody machines ever built.
Each release further cemented Steve Ritchie's reputation as one of the industry's greatest designers.
A New Chapter at Stern Pinball
Following the end of Williams, Steve Ritchie joined Stern Pinball, where he continued producing highly successful games.
One of his biggest hits was AC/DC, a machine that perfectly captured the energy of the band's music while delivering the fast gameplay that players expected from a Steve Ritchie design.
Later came Star Trek, inspired by the modern film series, another excellent example of his flowing layouts and satisfying shot design.
He also revisited one of his own greatest creations with Black Knight: Sword of Rage, bringing the legendary character back with spectacular artwork, aggressive gameplay and the return of his famous upper playfield.

Steve Ritchie Joins Jersey Jack Pinball
More recently Steve Ritchie joined Jersey Jack Pinball, beginning an exciting new chapter in his career.
His first game for the company was Elton John, combining spectacular lighting, beautiful artwork and an incredible integration of music and gameplay.
It is also one of our favourite machines to customise thanks to its vibrant colours and stunning cabinet artwork.
Sonic Pinball Continues the Legacy
Steve Ritchie's latest release is Sonic Pinball, another machine that immediately generated huge excitement within the pinball community.
Players were eager to see what the King of Flow would create next, and once again he delivered a fast, exciting layout full of satisfying shots and incredible energy.
As with many of his previous games, Sonic combines approachable gameplay for beginners with enough depth to keep experienced players coming back for years.
