There are good pinball shots.

And then there are those shots — the ones that feel perfect when you hit them, make the machine explode with lights and sound, and immediately make you want to try them again.

Modern pinball has produced some extraordinary examples of shot design. Here are a few of the most satisfying.

Godzilla Stern pinball shot layout machine with custom WizBlades

Godzilla — When Everything Comes Together

Godzilla is full of shots that feel rewarding because the layout constantly gives you something meaningful to aim at.

The flow between the major shots is one of the reasons the machine remains so highly regarded. It's not simply about hitting a target — it's about building a sequence where one successful shot naturally sets up another.

That's a big part of why Godzilla regularly appears near the top of modern pinball rankings. You can see where it sits in our Top 10 Stern Pinball Machines, while our Godzilla WizBlades are a natural way to add even more visual depth to the machine.

Jurassic Park — The O Shot

Few modern pinball shots have a reputation quite like the famous O shot on Jurassic Park.

It's demanding, unusual and extremely satisfying when you finally make it. The shot feels like something you're supposed to miss — until suddenly you learn the geometry and start hitting it consistently.

That transformation from impossible-looking to repeatable is exactly what makes a great pinball shot so addictive.

It's also one of the reasons Jurassic Park continues to be regarded as one of Keith Elwin's defining designs. Our Keith Elwin Pinball Machines Ranked looks at the evolution of his games.

JAWS — Shots That Don't Behave Normally

JAWS gets much of its personality from shots that don't travel where you expect.

The crossing shots force you to think differently about the playfield, and the unusual geometry makes even familiar targets feel new.

When you finally understand the routes through the machine, those shots become hugely satisfying precisely because they once felt so strange.

Deadpool — Direct and Violent

Deadpool has a different kind of satisfaction.

The Snikt shot is direct, readable and full of personality. You know exactly what you're trying to hit, and when you nail it, the machine makes sure you know it.

It is a reminder that a satisfying shot doesn't need to be complicated.

Sometimes the best shot is simply one that feels absolutely right.

Metallica Remastered pinball machine with custom mods

Metallica Remastered — Finding the Rhythm

Metallica Remastered and the original game both have some of the best shots for getting into a rhythm.

The ramps and repeated sequences can create that wonderful feeling where you're no longer thinking about each individual shot. You're simply playing the machine and letting the next shot happen.

That's particularly effective on a music-themed machine because the shots, soundtrack and callouts can start to feel like one continuous rhythm.

Star Trek — Speed Without Losing Control

Star Trek is fast, but its best sequences don't feel chaotic.

The satisfaction comes from finding that point where the machine is moving incredibly quickly and you are still completely in control.

That is one of Steve Ritchie's strengths as a designer. His layouts can feel intimidating at first, but once you learn the geometry, the speed becomes part of the fun rather than something you are fighting against.

If you want to explore more of his work, our Steve Ritchie: The King of Flow Who Changed Pinball Forever article is a good place to start.

Game of Thrones — The Battering Ram

The Battering Ram on Game of Thrones is satisfying for a slightly different reason.

The shot has physical weight and the machine gives you strong audiovisual feedback when it happens. You don't just see the result — you feel that you've done something important.

That's one of the great strengths of modern pinball: physical mechanisms can make a single shot much more memorable than a button press ever could.

Iron Maiden — The Shot You Keep Chasing

Iron Maiden is full of shots that reward precision.

Keith Elwin's layout doesn't always make things easy, but that is exactly why the successful shots are so satisfying. The game constantly gives experienced players another sequence to improve or another combo to chase.

It is one of those machines where you can still discover a better way to play after hundreds of games.

What Makes a Shot Satisfying?

It isn't necessarily difficulty.

The best shots usually combine good geometry, a clear objective, the right amount of challenge and excellent feedback.

Sometimes it's a shot you've struggled with for hours.

Sometimes it's one you can hit repeatedly and never get tired of.

And sometimes it's simply a shot that feels beautiful.

That's the magic of modern pinball design.

Sonic Jersey Jack Pinball machine

The New Machines Still Have Something to Prove

There are already some fascinating new machines that could eventually join conversations like this.

Pokémon, TRANSFORMERS: More Than Meets the Eye, Sonic and Bon Jovi all have plenty of promise, and each brings its own approach to shots, movement and theme integration. But it's still early to say which shots will become genuinely memorable. Pokémon and Transformers are already reaching players, while Sonic launched in 2026 and Bon Jovi is an especially new release with a limited production run.

The truth is that you need a lot of time playing a machine before you really understand which shots are brilliant, which ones become favourites and which ones simply look impressive in a trailer.

For now, these new games are promising.

Time will tell which shots we'll still be talking about years from now.

The Best Shots Make You Want Another Game

Ask different players for their favourite shot and you'll get completely different answers.

One person wants a brutal, near-impossible target. Another wants a perfect ramp combo. Someone else just wants the shot that makes the machine light up and scream.

That's why great pinball is so addictive.

The most satisfying shots aren't necessarily the hardest ones. They're the ones you always want to hit again.
