James Bond 007 is one of those pinball machines that can surprise you. At first glance, it looks like a straightforward modern Stern built around one of the biggest movie licences in history. Spend more time with it, though, and you start to understand why so many players become increasingly attached to it.

This is a fast, flowing and surprisingly strategic game that rewards repetition. The more you learn about its shots, modes, multipliers and scoring opportunities, the more there is to discover.

A Game That Grows on You

One of the most interesting things about James Bond 007 is that it does not always make its best first impression.

Some players fall in love immediately with the speed and shot flow. Others take longer to warm up to it. But one thing appears again and again: the game tends to become more enjoyable as you learn it.

That makes sense.

James Bond 007 is not simply about shooting whatever is flashing. There is real strategy involved in choosing objectives, building multipliers and deciding when to use your weapons and other scoring opportunities.

As your understanding improves, the game opens up.

That is probably one reason why it has developed such a strong reputation as an underrated modern Stern. The Pro, Premium and Limited Edition all share the same core game, but the depth of the rules means there is considerably more going on than you might initially expect.

Fast, Flowing and Sometimes Brutal

The layout is classic George Gomez in many ways.

There are satisfying combos, fast transitions and shots that encourage you to keep the ball moving. The long journey around the upper part of the playfield is particularly memorable, and once you find the rhythm, James Bond 007 can feel absolutely fantastic.

But this is not necessarily an easy game.

Some of the ramps and upper-flipper shots demand accuracy, and there are shots that can feel unforgiving when you miss them. That challenge is part of what makes Bond interesting, although it can also make the game frustrating when a good ball disappears before you have had the chance to build anything substantial.

In other words: this is not a game that plays itself.

And honestly, that suits the theme.

A James Bond pinball machine should probably require a little precision.

The Theme Is Everywhere

Stern had an enormous amount of James Bond history to work with, and the machine makes good use of it.

Rather than concentrating on a single film, the game brings together characters, locations and moments from across the classic Bond universe. The result feels like a celebration of the franchise rather than simply a pinball machine with a Bond image attached to it.

The movie clips and audio are an important part of that experience, and the theme gives the entire machine a strong personality.

The Doctor No artwork, particularly associated with the Pro, is also one of the more distinctive visual approaches in modern Stern pinball. Meanwhile, the Premium and LE add more physical toys and presentation to the same basic gameplay experience.

Pro vs Premium vs LE

The important thing here is that the Pro is already a complete game.

You are not buying a stripped-down version of James Bond 007. The core layout, rules and gameplay are all there, which is one reason some players actually prefer the Pro's more direct and uninterrupted style.

The Premium and LE, however, add more toys and mechanical presentation.

The rotating Jetpack Multiball is the obvious highlight. It is one of the most memorable visual features of the game and gives the machine additional theatre during play. The Premium and LE also bring more physical detail to the playfield, making the overall package feel more elaborate.

For us, the Premium is probably the sweet spot if you want the fullest version of the George Gomez game.

The LE takes the presentation further again, with the extra collector appeal and premium visual details expected from a Stern Limited Edition. But importantly, all three versions remain recognisably the same game. The difference is more about presentation and physical features than completely transforming the gameplay.

A Modern Stern That Deserves More Attention

James Bond 007 sometimes feels slightly overlooked compared with the biggest modern Stern hits.

That is strange because it does so many things well.

The layout is distinctive.

The shots are memorable.

The game is fast.

There is genuine strategic depth.

And perhaps most importantly, it appears to reward repeated play more than many people initially expect.

It may not be the smoothest game ever made, and some shots will definitely test your patience. But there is something compelling about the machine that keeps pulling you back for another game.

That is a very good sign.

A pinball machine does not have to be perfect to be addictive.

In fact, sometimes a little frustration is part of what makes you want another shot.

Don't Confuse It with the 60th Anniversary Edition

James Bond 007 also has one particularly unusual member of the family: the James Bond 60th Anniversary Limited Edition.

But this is not simply another version of the same game.

James Bond 007 is an excellent modern Stern that may deserve even more attention than it gets.

It is fast without feeling mindless.

Deep without becoming impossible to understand.

Challenging without losing its sense of fun.

And the more you play it, the more you start to appreciate the decisions hidden behind what initially looks like a very straightforward layout.

The Pro is a fantastic complete version of the game.

The Premium adds some of the machine's best physical features.

And the LE delivers the collector-focused presentation for those who want the most elaborate version.

But whichever version you play, the most important thing remains the same.

James Bond 007 has that quality every great pinball machine needs:

you finish a game, and you immediately want to play another one.
