Best Mustang Pinball Mods

Few pinball machines have a theme as instantly recognisable as Mustang.

Released by Stern in 2014 to celebrate 50 years of the Ford Mustang, the machine brings together classic cars, racing, American muscle and fast pinball action. With Pro, Premium Boss and 50 Years LE versions, there are several different takes on the same iconic theme.

The original artwork already does a great job of capturing the Mustang identity, but there are some areas where custom artwork can make the machine feel even more complete.

Here are some of our favourite Mustang pinball mods.

Extend the Mustang Artwork Inside the Cabinet

The inside of the cabinet is one of the first places where custom artwork can completely change the feel of a machine.

Our WizBlades extend the Mustang artwork around the playfield, adding another layer of colour and detail to an area that would otherwise remain relatively plain.

On a machine built around beautiful cars and racing graphics, this works particularly well. The artwork becomes part of the visual frame around the playfield rather than simply sitting on the outside of the cabinet.

It is also one of those modifications that becomes more noticeable the longer you own the machine. Once the inside of the cabinet has been filled with artwork, going back to the original plain interior can feel surprisingly empty.

Turn the Speaker Area Into Part of the Design

The speaker panel is another large visual area that can easily be overlooked.

We make WizPanels for all three Mustang versions: Pro, Premium and LE, allowing the artwork to continue upwards from the cabinet into the backbox.

The panels are magnetic and pre-cut specifically for the machine, so installation takes only a few seconds. The speaker area remains functional because the artwork is made with the necessary openings to allow the sound through.

The result is much more cohesive: instead of having a large section of plain speaker material above the playfield, the Mustang artwork continues into it.

Bring More Detail Down to the Player

The apron is one of those small areas that can make a surprisingly big difference.

For Mustang, we have WizAprons for the Premium and LE, adding another piece of themed artwork directly in front of the player.

Because the apron sits so close to the flippers, you see it constantly during a game. It is therefore a great place for a detail that might be relatively small but still contributes to the overall visual experience.

Combined with WizBlades and WizPanels, it helps make the inside of the machine feel much more finished.

Put Mustang Artwork Right Into the Action

The flippers are probably the most active part of any pinball machine, so they are also a fun place to add some personality.

WizBats put custom Mustang artwork directly onto the tops of the flipper bats, adding another themed detail right in the middle of the playfield.

It is a particularly nice finishing touch because you don't need to make a major change to the machine to notice the difference.

The Mustang theme is already about movement, speed and performance. Having the flippers themselves carry some of that artwork makes perfect sense.

Finish the Front of the Cabinet

The front of the machine deserves some attention too.

WizDoors add custom artwork to the coin-door area, helping connect the front of the cabinet with the rest of the Mustang design.

This is especially useful when you've already customised the playfield area and speaker panel. Rather than having the front remain visually separate, the WizDoors give the cabinet another themed element that ties everything together.

It is the sort of final detail that can make several individual modifications look like one complete custom design.

Which Mustang Version Do You Have?

One of the nice things about Mustang is that the different versions have their own visual identities.

The Pro has its Mach 1-inspired artwork, the Premium is built around the Boss Mustang theme, and the LE celebrates the anniversary with its own artwork and details.

That makes customisation particularly interesting because the goal isn't simply to put Mustang artwork on the machine. The best mods should feel like they belong to the specific version sitting in your game room.
