A Theme That Could Not Have Been Better Adapted
Many pinball machines use famous characters and artwork.
The Lord of the Rings goes much further.
The entire game follows the story of all three films, allowing players to relive the Fellowship's journey from the Shire to Mount Doom. Every major objective, every mode and every multiball feels connected to the story.
The sound package is equally spectacular.
One unforgettable moment arrives when Saruman shouts "To War!", launching one of the game's most exciting multiballs. Combined with Howard Shore's incredible soundtrack and movie callouts, the machine creates an atmosphere that still gives collectors goosebumps today.

The Ring Shot Everyone Remembers
Every legendary machine has one iconic shot.
For The Lord of the Rings, it's undoubtedly The One Ring.
Players shoot the centre ramp, sending the ball through a spinner before it flies directly into the Ring itself. Hidden inside is a magnet that catches the ball in mid-air before dramatically releasing it back into play.
It's one of the most satisfying shots ever designed and perfectly represents the journey to destroy the Ring.
Another unforgettable feature is the Balrog.
Hidden beneath the playfield, the enormous Balrog rises during gameplay, blocking shots and challenging players just as the creature does in the films.
It's a spectacular mechanical toy that gives the game even more personality.
George Gomez's Signature Layout
The Lord of the Rings also introduced one of George Gomez's most recognisable design philosophies.
Many of his greatest machines use a variation of what's often called a fan layout.
The left ramp naturally feeds the left flipper.
The right ramp returns to the right flipper.
This creates incredibly satisfying looping combos that can continue for surprisingly long periods when played well.
At the centre of the playfield sits a major mechanical toy.
In The Lord of the Rings, it's the Balrog.
Later, The Sopranos would place the famous safe in a similar position, while Pokémon Pinball continues that evolution with its own interactive central toy.
It's a layout George Gomez has refined over many years because it simply works.
One of the First Truly Deep Modern Rule Sets
The Lord of the Rings arrived at a turning point in pinball history.
Earlier machines often asked players to complete a series of modes before reaching a single Wizard Mode.
The Lord of the Rings took that idea much further.
Players must complete dozens of objectives throughout all three movies, finish major multiballs, complete numerous side missions and continue progressing through an enormous ruleset before finally reaching the game's ultimate objectives.
Even for skilled players, reaching the end of the game can easily take 30 to 40 minutes.
It feels less like playing a traditional pinball machine and more like completing an epic video game campaign.
That depth has inspired many modern Stern games that followed.
