If you follow modern pinball, 2026 has been difficult to ignore. New machines are arriving from established manufacturers and newer players alike, and there is a particularly interesting mix of licensed themes, original ideas, ambitious layouts and increasingly sophisticated software.

Some of the year's machines are already becoming major talking points, while others are still too new to judge. That is part of what makes this moment so interesting: Fallout, Bon Jovi, Sonic, TRANSFORMERS: More Than Meets the Eye and Pokémon are all approaching modern pinball from very different directions.

And there is plenty more happening around them.

Fallout Has Arrived With a Completely Different Approach

The biggest recent arrival is undoubtedly Fallout from Stern. Revealed in September 2026, it brings Keith Elwin's design philosophy into one of the most recognisable worlds in gaming and television.

What makes Fallout particularly interesting is that it doesn't simply try to reproduce the visual language of the franchise. The machine uses unusual geometry, multiple playing areas, a reversed flipper and several mechanical ideas that make it feel different from a conventional modern pinball layout.

We've already taken a closer look at why Fallout is one of the most original pinball machines in years, and the machine is still very much at the beginning of its life.

Of course, we couldn't resist adding our own artwork to it either. The Fallout Pinball Mods are designed to push that post-apocalyptic atmosphere even further, from the cabinet sides to the Vault-inspired details around the machine.

Bon Jovi Brings Barrels of Fun Into the Spotlight

Another major development has been the arrival of Bon Jovi from Barrels of Fun. The machine is part of the company's growing presence in modern pinball and follows the distinctive approach we've already seen from the manufacturer.

With a limited production run of 700 machines listed in current databases, Bon Jovi is also an example of how modern pinball continues to combine large entertainment licences with relatively small production numbers.

It is still far too early to know how Bon Jovi will be viewed years from now, but its arrival adds another interesting voice to an increasingly diverse pinball landscape.

Sonic Brings Speed to the Pinball Playfield

Then there is Sonic the Hedgehog, Jersey Jack Pinball's 2026 release.

Sonic is almost tailor-made for pinball. Speed, loops, ramps, characters, bosses and constant movement all translate naturally into the physical format, and the machine takes that concept seriously.

It is also another example of how modern pinball is becoming increasingly ambitious in the way it uses licensed properties. Instead of simply putting characters and artwork on a cabinet, the best modern machines try to turn the theme itself into a gameplay language.

Sonic is now in production across multiple editions, including Collector's, Special and Arcade versions.

TRANSFORMERS Is Doing Something We Haven't Seen Before

TRANSFORMERS: More Than Meets the Eye is another machine that makes 2026 particularly interesting.

The machine already had an unusually ambitious ruleset, but the recent 0.92 code update added something particularly interesting: Prime Training.

Instead of simply adding another mode, the new feature creates a dedicated environment where players can practise specific skills. It includes training drills, Mission Prep and dedicated Multiball practice.

We recently looked at the new Prime Training mode in TRANSFORMERS, because it represents an interesting evolution in how pinball software can be designed.

And for anyone who owns the machine, there is plenty of room to make the cabinet look as distinctive as the game plays with our TRANSFORMERS: More Than Meets the Eye Pinball Mods.

Pokémon Is Showing How Much Software Can Change a Machine

Pokémon is perhaps the best example of why modern pinball can change dramatically after launch.

The machine arrived earlier in 2026, but the software has continued to expand. Recent code introduced new Pokémon, additional modes, story progression and the ability to build and view your Pokémon collection through Stern's connected ecosystem.

That is important because it changes the relationship between the player and the machine. Pokémon isn't simply a game you play repeatedly—it increasingly gives players things to discover, collect and complete.

We've already covered the latest Pokémon code and its new features, and it will be fascinating to see where the ruleset eventually ends up.

And naturally, the visual side has not been forgotten. Our Pokémon Pinball Mods give collectors another way to personalise the machine.

And 2026 Doesn't Stop There

The five machines above are probably the easiest examples of how interesting the current generation has become, but they are far from alone.

Dungeon Crawler Carl brings another unusual licence into pinball through Multimorphic, while The Big Lebowski: Jesus Edition gives Dutch Pinball a particularly distinctive limited-edition take on the cult classic. Current listings put the Jesus Edition at just 300 planned games.

Galactic Tank Force: Victory Edition is another example of an original theme receiving a new edition, while Tales of the Arabian Nights: 30th Anniversary Remake brings a celebrated classic back through Pedretti Gaming. Yukon Yeti from Turner Pinball adds yet another original theme to an already crowded year.

A Very Different Pinball Landscape

Perhaps the most interesting thing about 2026 isn't any individual machine. It is the variety.

We have Fallout experimenting with layout and mechanical design. Sonic turns speed into a central part of its identity. TRANSFORMERS continues to push software and training. Pokémon is becoming deeper through ongoing code. Bon Jovi demonstrates the continued strength of music licences, while companies such as Barrels of Fun, Jersey Jack, Multimorphic, Pedretti and Turner are adding even more variety to the market.

There are also more machines arriving than ever from a wider range of manufacturers. Current 2026 machine listings include all of these releases alongside many other new and remade games.

That makes 2026 a particularly exciting snapshot of modern pinball.

We don't yet know which of these machines will become the classics of the future. Some will probably grow dramatically as their code develops. Others may become cult favourites for completely different reasons.

But that's exactly what makes this period so interesting: modern pinball isn't standing still.
