"Countdown to Extinction" also happens to be the title of one of Megadeth's most famous albums. It's also the title of an episode from the Transformers universe.

Coincidence?

Probably.

Or perhaps... maybe not.

In Godzilla, designer Keith Elwin appears on the backglass standing on top of a building while the city is being destroyed around him—calmly taking photographs of the chaos.

There is absolutely no official evidence that Stern's next music pinball machine is Megadeth.

The phrase also fits perfectly within the Transformers theme, making it entirely possible that it's simply a clever reference to the animated series.

But it's certainly fun to speculate.

Megadeth has one of the richest catalogues in heavy metal, iconic album artwork and instantly recognizable music.

Just imagine hearing Symphony of Destruction, Holy Wars, Peace Sells, or Countdown to Extinction blasting from a pinball machine.

After the success of Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Rush, Foo Fighters and other music-themed machines, Megadeth feels like a license that could create something truly unforgettable.

Stern Has Teased Fans Before

This wouldn't even be the first time the community has followed unexpected clues.

Several years ago, Stern Pinball sponsored a concert where promotional material prominently featured Slayer alongside the Stern name.

Speculation exploded.

Many collectors became convinced that Stern was preparing a Slayer pinball machine.

That machine never arrived.

However, something interesting did happen.

When Stern later released Black Knight: Sword of Rage, the soundtrack was created by Scott Ian, one of heavy metal's most respected guitarists.

While Scott Ian is actually best known as the guitarist for Anthrax rather than Slayer, the episode showed just how quickly small details can fuel enormous speculation within the hobby.
