The 2012 X-Men from Stern remains one of those machines that has developed a loyal following over the years. Designed by John Borg, with artwork inspired by the world of the X-Men comics, it has plenty of personality—and plenty of room for custom artwork.

This is also one of those older Stern machines where the right combination of mods can make a surprisingly big visual difference. Our X-Men Pinball Mods collection covers the main versions of the game with designs made specifically for each cabinet.

Bring the X-Men Artwork Inside the Cabinet

The WizBlades are a natural starting point. The inside of the cabinet is such a large visual area that adding custom artwork there makes the playfield feel much more immersive.

For X-Men, the artwork can extend the comic-book atmosphere right around the game, adding colour and character to an area that would otherwise remain mostly dark.

If you want to see why we consider blades one of the most effective visual upgrades, our guide to Why WizBlades Are One of the Best Pinball Mods goes into much more detail.

Three Versions, Three Different Speaker Panel Designs

The X-Men Pro and the two Limited Editions—Wolverine LE and Magneto LE—each have their own dedicated WizPanel design.

That means the artwork isn't simply a generic X-Men panel applied to every machine. Each version gets artwork designed around its own identity.

The magnetic panels transform the speaker area into another part of the X-Men artwork while remaining extremely easy to install or remove.

It's a small change physically, but visually it can make the front of the machine feel much more complete.

X-Men custom WizAprons with character artwork

Give the Apron Its Own X-Men Story

The WizAprons follow the same idea, with dedicated designs for the Pro, Wolverine LE and Magneto LE.

The apron sits directly underneath the playfield, so it is one of those areas that becomes very noticeable once you start adding artwork elsewhere.

Matching the apron to the rest of the cabinet helps tie all those individual modifications together rather than making them feel like separate additions.

Add a Little More X-Men to the Flippers

The WizBats are one of the smaller modifications, but they sit directly in the player's line of sight throughout the game.

With X-Men's colourful comic-book aesthetic, they're a particularly fun way of adding another little layer of custom artwork without changing anything about the gameplay.

It's exactly the sort of detail that starts becoming noticeable once the larger areas have already been customised.

Finish the Magneto and Wolverine Editions

The two Limited Editions give us some particularly interesting opportunities.

The Magneto LE WizDoors add custom artwork to the coin-door area, turning one of the otherwise plain sections of the cabinet into another part of the theme.

And for the Wolverine LE, the WizWings are a great finishing detail, extending the artwork around the backbox hinges and adding another small but highly visible piece of X-Men character to the machine.

Together, these details can make the LE versions feel much more individual. (also available for the pro)

One of John Borg's Underrated Games

X-Men is also a machine that deserves a little more attention when discussing modern Stern history.

We've previously included it in our article about The Most Underrated Modern Pinball Machines, alongside several other Stern games that have developed dedicated followings without always receiving the same attention as the biggest collector favourites.

And that's part of what makes customising a machine like X-Men so enjoyable.

You're not just adding decoration.

You're taking a machine with a strong identity and pushing that identity further.

Whether it's WizBlades, WizPanels, WizAprons, WizBats, WizDoors or WizWings, the goal is always the same: make the X-Men machine feel even more like your X-Men machine.
