Why Sonic Is Such a Fast Pinball Machine

Every great pinball machine has its own personality.
Some games reward careful planning. Others encourage controlled shot-making. And then there are machines like Sonic Pinball, where everything seems to happen at double speed.
From the moment the first ball is launched, there's an intensity that rarely lets up. Balls race around the playfield, rebounds arrive almost instantly, and players quickly realise that hesitation usually ends with a drain.
That isn't an accident. It's the result of dozens of design decisions working together to create one of the fastest modern pinball machines ever made.

Connected Orbits Keep the Ball Moving
One of the biggest reasons Sonic feels so incredibly fast is the layout itself.
The machine features beautifully connected orbit shots that allow the ball to maintain its momentum instead of constantly slowing down. Rather than ending one shot before starting another, the ball naturally flows from one orbit into the next, creating continuous movement around the playfield.
That uninterrupted flow gives players very little time to reset between shots. The ball is almost always travelling at speed, making every decision feel more urgent. It's exactly the kind of design philosophy that has made Steve Ritchie famous throughout his career.
Often called the King of Flow, Steve Ritchie has spent decades designing games where momentum never seems to stop. If you're interested in his legendary work, explore our Top 10 Steve Ritchie Pinball Machines, where we rank some of his greatest designs.
Dr. Robotnik's Zone Never Lets You Relax
The centre of the playfield contributes just as much to Sonic's relentless pace.
Around Dr. Robotnik's area, the ball ricochets between the targets, vertical slings and the central ramp entrance with remarkable speed. Every impact sends it in another direction, and instead of calming the game down, the entire area seems to build even more momentum before firing the ball back towards the flippers.
There's almost no breathing room.
One second the ball is bouncing around Robotnik's lair, and the next it's already racing back towards the player, demanding another quick reaction.
The Accelerator Ramp Is Pure Steve Ritchie
Perhaps the most exciting feature is the right-hand ramp.
Instead of simply carrying the ball to another part of the playfield, Sonic includes an accelerator hidden within the ramp itself. As the ball climbs, it's given an extra burst of speed before looping back onto the main playfield and arriving at the right flipper far faster than most players expect.
That sudden burst of velocity catches newcomers completely off guard and keeps experienced players on their toes.
Long-time Steve Ritchie fans will recognise the idea from No Fear (1995), where he used a similar accelerator to maintain the game's incredible pace. Decades later, the concept still feels fresh, and Sonic uses it brilliantly to ensure the action never loses momentum.
A Compact Upper Playfield Makes Every Shot Faster
The upper playfield is another major reason why Sonic feels so different from many modern machines.
Unlike upper playfields that almost become a temporary safe zone, Sonic's is designed to keep players under constant pressure. The flippers are positioned noticeably further apart, leaving a large gap between them, so the ball rarely stays upstairs for very long before dropping back onto the main playfield.
That means players don't get much of a break.
The upper playfield also occupies only a fraction of the machine, so every shot is naturally shorter. The orbits, ramps and return lanes all cover much less distance than they would on a full-sized playfield. Because the ball has less ground to travel, it comes flying back towards the player almost immediately.
Before you've even processed one shot, you're already preparing for the next.
Every Design Choice Builds Momentum
What makes Sonic so impressive is that none of these features work in isolation.
The connected orbits keep the ball flowing.
The accelerator ramp adds sudden bursts of speed.
Robotnik's area creates controlled chaos.
The compact upper playfield shortens every shot.
The wide flipper gap upstairs quickly sends the ball back into the main game.
Individually, each feature makes the machine a little faster. Together, they create one of the most relentlessly fast-playing pinball machines of the modern era.
It's a perfect example of Steve Ritchie's design philosophy, where momentum is never allowed to disappear.

The Artwork Feels As Fast As the Gameplay
The visual presentation reinforces everything happening beneath the glass.
Bright colours, energetic animations and dynamic artwork combine with the machine's flowing layout to create an experience that constantly feels alive. Even when the ball pauses for a moment, the game never feels static.
Collectors who want to continue that artwork beyond the playfield often personalise their machines with our Sonic WizBlades, extending the factory artwork across the cabinet while preserving the original style.
Owners of both the Arcade/Special and Collector's Edition models can also complete the look with our WizPanels, created specifically for each version of the machine. AE/SE WizPanels or CE WizPanels.

Speed Is More Than Ball Velocity
Many people assume a fast pinball machine simply means the ball moves quickly.
Sonic proves that true speed comes from intelligent layout design.
It's the combination of flowing geometry, uninterrupted momentum, compact shot distances and constant decision-making that makes every game feel so exhilarating. Every section of the playfield has been engineered to keep players engaged from the first plunge until the final drain.
It's still early in the machine's life, but Sonic already feels like one of Steve Ritchie's strongest modern designs. As more players discover what it has to offer, we fully expect it to earn a place among the very best games of his remarkable career.
